ILOIILO CITY – Sympathy and anger poured out in social media following the National Telecommunications Commission’s order to shutdown ABS-CBN, the country’s largest entertainment and media conglomerate, last Tuesday, May 5.
Hashtags #NoToABSCBNShutdown, #DefendPressFreedom, and even #OUSTDUTERTENOW became the country’s top trending topics on Twitter.
Biggest stars in the industry, different individuals, and groups expressed their dismay and questioned NTC’s cease and desist order against ABS-CBN despite COVID-19 pandemic.
On Instagram, Angel Locsin posted,
“Para sa Kapwa. Sa panahon na kailangan ng hanap buhay ng mga tao. Let’s be considerate and ask ourselves kung makakatulong ba ang mga desisyon natin sa lalo na sa panahong ito. To ABS-CBN, isang karangalan po na naging bahagi at nakasama ko po kayo. Mahal ko kayo”.
The actress ended her post with “Para sa #MalayangPamamahayag #NoToABSCBNShutdown”.
“In the middle of a pandemic where avenues for proper information dissemination could literally save lives, it really doesn’t make sense to silence the media. It’s not worth your personal conflicts,” said Dr. Jai Cabajar, a Twitter influencer and Philippine General Hospital and Internal Medicine resident doctor.
Former Supreme Court spokesperson Theodore Te wrote on Twitter, “This is how liberty dies…with dead air. #DefendPressFreedom”.
The College Editors Guild of the Philippines also condemned the NTC’s order.
“The regime’s shameless attack to press freedom and persecution of media practitioners who are staunch critics of Duterte regime and his gross negligence in handling the coronavirus pandemic are concrete manifestations of his looming dictatorship. Duterte’s cease and desist order is a dictator’s clear weapon to repress the freedom of the press,” said CEGP national president Daryl Angelo Baybado.
Shortly after ABS-CBN goes off air, radio reporter Rex Cornelio of dyMD Energy 93.7 FM was shot dead in Daro, Dumaguete City around 8:45 pm, May 5. Rex is the 16th journalist slain under the Duterte administration. (panaytoday.net)
