Human rights groups Kaammoyo Ti Kappia (KTK) and Kabataan Partylist (KPL) Ilocos condemn the indiscriminate bombing by the military in the communities near the border of Pilar, Abra, and Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur last April 2, 2024.
According to the information from KTK, the NPA clashed with the Philippine Army’s 501st Infantry Brigade followed by an aerial strike from the Philippine Air Force, forcing the residents to evacuate.
KPL Ilocos reported that around 250 families have evacuated the area. The group called the attack a violation of International Humanitarian Law because it posed a grave risk to the communities situated within the bomb’s range. KPL Ilocos also denounced the resulting displacement and the loss of livelihood of residents as an affront to human rights.
KTK lamented that farmers who have suffered under the El Nino and who are burdened with high prices of farm inputs are now further debilitated by the fear and trauma caused by the bombings.
KTK called for an end to the indiscriminate bombing in the communities and demanded the resumption of peace talks between the Philippine government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP). The group believes that resolving the root cause of the armed conflict and ensuring justice for all will guarantee long-term peace./PT
