SUGAR WORKERS’ GROUP WELCOMES THE RELEASE OF A DETAINED MEMBER, CALLS TO RELEASE OTHER POLITICAL PRISONERS

BACOLOD CITY – The National Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW) was delighted with the release of its member, Ma. Lindy Perocho, in Negros Island last March 6. According to the group, this only shows that the state has failed to prevent the people from organizing and opposing the laws that exploit the sugar workers.

The NFSW added that it will continue to seek justice for the illegal arrest of Perocho, Imelda Sultan, and others who are still facing trumped-up charges just because they fight against said anti-people laws and policies.

Perocho and Sultan are members of NFSW who were arrested in Negros Island during the November 1, 2019 raid and faced trumped-up charges. Together with other arrested progressives on the island, they were known as the Negros 54.

The NFSW continues the call to release Sultan and all political prisoners who are still facing trumped-up charges throughout the Philippines./PT
